![]() This study determines if the 105-mm howitzer should be the future direct support weapon system for light forces from now until the year 2010 and beyond. Depending on the equipment used in the Portuguese Army to determine the elements under study, it was analyzed the effect that other forms of rounding would have on the fires accuracy and presented a form of rounding that significantly reduces the identified effects and simultaneously simplifies the way of rounding used in Target Location Methods and Firing Data Elements computation. It can be concluded that the deviations originated by the use of rounding, defined by the Portuguese doctrine regarding Target Location Methods and Firing Data Elements determination, can be higher than the lethal radius of the ballistics munitions, reducing the fires effectiveness.Īt the same time, it was conducted an analysis to understand if there is a real need to use these roundings. To understand the influence of this deviations on the accuracy of the Field Artillery Fires, the obtained values were compared with the effective lethal radius of the Field Artillery munitions in use in the Portuguese Army. Therefore, it was carried out the simulated combination of the various rounding errors identified in the Target Location Methods and in the determination of the Firing Data Elements, and determined the deviations in relation to the probable location of the points of impact, obtained by the use or omission of rounding. The work followed the deductive method as the method of approach, and the experimental method as the method of procedure, combined with a quantitative analysis. In parallel, it intends to verify the need for differentiated rounding rules and the possibility of adopting a single form of rounding that could be applied to all existing procedures. This research work, under the theme "The influence of rounding on the accuracy of the Field Artillery Fires", aims to verify the effect on the accuracy of the Field Artillery Fires, caused by the rounding procedures used in fires computation. ![]()
